AWARE minutes 6-27-04

**Special Note: NO AWARE MEETING NEXT WEEK JULY 4!**

The Honorable Randall Cotton facilitating.
Attendance: 17 counting Demetrius.

Introductions as usual.

News of the Week by Carl (interrupted briefly by insecticide).

Reports:

-Prospect for Peace - demonstrating this Saturday, July 3 from 2-4 pm as
always, on the west side of Prospect Ave across from Lowe's.

-Legal Issues - Meeting with police scheduled with atty Bob Finch (see
separate post).

- July Fourth parade - Float looking good, thanks to lots of help,
papier-mâché done, painting and details needed. Advance media coverage for
the first time! We need folks to carry signs in the parade! Work parties
Mon 3:30-7pm, Wed 5-7pm, Thursday 5-7pm. Working group needs to meet
briefly after meeting. Participants gather at 12:30 at Lincoln and Nevada
unless & until further notice. (One of us will be there to redirect you.)

-Tabling/Taste of Champaign - No table at Farmers' Market because of
Taste of Champaign. Almost $700 collected, Fahrenheit 9/11 tickets
raffled off, bumperstickers and buttons need replenishing, War Times all
distributed - approved $15 to publishers. Nicky working on stencils for
signs at future tabling events. Kerry postcards also popular, as well as
Democracy Now petition (see below), and AWARE contact sign-up. About 10
people registered to vote. We should consider tabling at upcoming movies,
such as The Corporation and Control Room.

-WILL Commentaries - No development on suggested special slot for national
and international commentaries: stalled by Jay Pearce at the moment.
Randall will follow up. Jan received a fundraising letter from WILL,
and called & argued over the policy prohibited national/international
commentaries. Pearce adamant over policy and said he'd never approve
Democracy Now! He said DN claims to be a news program, not commentary,
but standards not high enough! Jan included a note on this with her
response to fundraiser; others encouraged to do the same.

-DN!/UPTV - Randall attended public meeting, addressed the stalling,
provided info. Still pursuing the UPTV commission angle, but discouraging
signs: mayor kicked Danielle Chynoweth and Urbana Free library rep off the
commission. Petition for DN is in full swing, though: over 200 signatures,
more by July 12 meeting. Help needed collecting organizational cosponsors.
See Randall.

-Fahrenheit 9/11 - Moviegoers lined up several deep just to see our table.
Some donations. Lots signed up for more info. Plenty of literature
left but almost no buttons and bumperstickers. Kruses announce new AWARE
banner and tee-shirts!

-Finances - $1,733.97 balance, not including income from Taste and F911
approx. $700. Linda notes: About $500 spent on buttons and bumperstickers
to get that $700. Not a big fundraiser, but worthwhile for our purposes.

New Ideas:
CCHCC dinner - About $50 approved for ad; Ricky and Linda will look for old
one. No AWARE tickets/table this time; individuals encouraged to attend.

Events of the Past Week: No report.

Upcoming Events:

-Prospect for Peace on July 3, 2-4 pm, North Prospect and Marketview,
across the street from our usual location.

-UC Progressives Picnic on July 3, 5-8pm, at Crystal Lake Park, $5 donation
and bring a dish if possible.

-Annual July Fourth parade on, well, July 4. Gather at 12:30 at Lincoln
and Nevada unless and until further notice. (One of us will meet you
there to tell you how to find our spot.)

-Signmaking party at 7pm on July 16, Jay Mittenthal's house, 605 W Oregon
St, Urbana, for Quakers' Hiroshima Day anti-nuclear demo (scheduled for
Aug. 6 at UIUC Alma Mater).
