AWARE Minutes January 11, 2004

Facilitator: Linda Evans

Recorder: Durl Kruse

Attendance: 17

- Introductions

- News of the Week: Carl Estabrook was unable to attend and report the
"News of the Week". He will post it to AWARE's webpage: www.anti-war.net.
Other news stories of the week were shared by those present. For those
interested in the Urbana Walmart expansion, it will be discussed at the
next city council meeting on January 20th.

- Alamanac Fun Group: The group is still talking and working on this
event. Ricky and Susan discussed the challenge of "framing" parody that
captures the climate of fear that pervades our society which partially
results from our government's suggestions as to how citizens are to
protect themselves from the terrorist threat. The goal of this activity
is to raise people's awareness and understanding of what is occurring
by making fun of the fearmongering nature of many of these governmental
alerts, notices, and warnings.

- Martin Luther King Day Celebration: Durl will coordinate flyer
distribution at the MLK Jr. event on Sunday, January 18th at the Krannert
Center. Linda E. will make more fliers and obtain documentation that
AWARE is a registered student organization on campus.

- WILL Update: Lisa Chason reported that the group has not met and that
it will do so and report at a future meeting.

- Treasurer's Report: Linda reported AWARE has a balance of $2232.42.

-New Ideas:

Lisa Chason reported she is working on another Sunday afternoon session
entitled "Understanding The Times We're In" which would focus on current
thinking about the World Bank and IMF. Michael Goldman has been contacted
to be presenter. Details are yet to be finalized, but hopefully the
session can be scheduled for early February. A second topic for a
Sunday afternoon session was suggested that will focus on understanding
the role and influence religion has on Bush's thinking and its impact
on domestic and international policy. Robert McKim was mentioned as a
possible presenter. Anyone with the name of a person who might have the
expertise and willingness to do this should forward it to Lisa Chason.

-Upcoming Events:

Jan. 22 - 24, "Education or Incarceration? Schools and Prisons in a
Punishing Democracy", Levis Faculty Center. Free and open to the public.
MLK Celebration events: Holiday Inn, January 16 at 4:00 pm and Krannert
Center, January 18 at 8:00 pm
